Starlight Overdrive

from Intergalactic by Jeff Michaels

about

It’s never easy.

The good part: We left the asteroid belt, on our way to the Ninth planet, I still, embarrassingly, have no idea what it’s called - it's just a cold, dead rock. I just don’t remember. My humanoid bipedal brains are at maximum capacity, thanks to extra starlight, although I may have compromised this one significantly indulging in various extracurricular activities while on Earth. We’re still nearly fully fueled, the modifications to our life support were not only superb, but self-sustaining. And.. get this, our asteroid ride took us actually a little closer to our destination.

We started for the Ninth planet. Sylvania had nearly 3 weeks of starlight time and we were getting to the point that speech was almost unnecessary - it's all instinct. Both of our eyes regained their natural starlighter bioluminescence and we both had a healthy glow about us. I was starting to wonder if we really needed to go to the Ninth planet.. but it would be far too risky to disincorporate before she’s ready.

The bad part: We noticed them chasing us on the 23rd cycle. They’re so black, light just gets sucked into them. Most never really see them until it's far too late. We maxed out our thrust and were just closing in on being able to see the planet visually when it exploded. Sylvania was again horrified. I did not laugh. We saw them coming for us from the front as well, it would seem they were serious about capturing a few starlighters to power things for the next billion years.

I went to grab a little something from our quarters and I explained to Sylvania that we had one option left without disincorporating, which was still infinitely too risky for her – no telling where she might wind up, and usually pulled into the nearest black hole and into another unmapped dimension.

As the dark clouder androids closed in around us from all sides, I took the ultimate chance, engaged the starlight overdrive (it’s a single use dimensional detonator that propels the users ship into the next dimension possessing a > present mass) which has the added benefit of destroying everything within a parsec, and in this case, there was nothing but dark clouders so good riddance…

I remember wondering what would happen to the Sol solar system with the loss of the Ninth planets gravitational pull as we vanished from this dimens...

To Be Continued.

lyrics

well your universe is broken
as broken as my soul
and I have had enough
and everyone should die
but it is not my job
you're on your own

I need starlight
starlight overdrive

if you're waiting
for some deity to save you
I can guarantee
you'll be waiting a long, long time
and my soul may be broken
but it sure as hell ain't down
with your sickness
and your pathetic greed

I need starlight

starlight overdrive
