Starlighter

from Intergalactic by Jeff Michaels

about

The voices are unrelenting.

I can’t lose her again. But here we float.

Our oxygen levels are so low that Sylvania is unconscious, but still barely breathing and I am precariously holding on.

I have set off all of our sublight beacons and am emitting an emergency distress signal on all frequency spectrums. I can’t be sure if I see lights coming towards us or if it’s just oxygen-deprived hallucinations.

I’m just going to close my eyes for a moment..

lyrics

I am thankful
for a radio signal
just to hear signs of life
way out here

they spoke of weather
and baseball scores
and things that I should buy if I lived
a hundred years ago

starlighter
can you hold me a little tighter
as we float around the stars
without gravity

and starlighter
I'll wipe the tears from your eyes
because I know it's getting
hard to breathe

it's hard to breathe

we're just floating
in a beer can
near the planet
of debris
and I have to pause
and stop and wonder
if you can discern us
from any other

well I see lights
getting closer
or is it all
just in my mind
just to step once more
and feel the dirt between my toes
are we anywhere that
they will ever find
